LOIS AMITRANO – INSURANCE TECHNOLOGY FACULTY

Lois Amitrano graduated from the College of Staten Island (‘84 -’86). She is a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), a Certified Health Care Instructor (CHCI) and a Certified Online Instructor. Currently, she serves as the Senior Billing and Coding Instructor at Star Career Academy.
Lois’ energetic and dynamic teaching style focuses on providing a balanced in-depth educational experience, preparing today’s students to become tomorrow’s medical billing professionals. As a Senior Billing and Coding Instructor, Lois applies her diverse 24+ years of industry experience and expertise to motivate and facilitate the training of coding and billing professionals. She has successfully managed educational programs, from conceptualization through design to the creation of learning materials. With her proven communication and interpersonal skills, she has delivered these lessons to students of all levels and backgrounds while proficiently maintaining the prerequisite regulatory record keeping and administration.
Lois has developed expertise in, and effectively integrates, elements of Microsoft XP Operating System, Microsoft Office, MediSoft, Lytec, The Medical Manager, and PractiSoft Dental Software into her classes to provide students with the holistic educational experience necessary to become effective team members in the medical profession.
SHARON ARMSTRONG – MEDICAL TRAINING FACULTY
Intro Class Instructor, Philadelphia Campus
Sharon Armstrong was born and raised in the Midwest, and moved to Philadelphia in 1984. Having attended The American Institute of Design and earning her MA certificate, Sharon was hired by her alma mater as a teaching assistant. She went on to work in this field at several facilities and eventually started teaching full time.
For the past 18 years, Sharon has worked as an Instructor, Externship Coordinator and Director of Career Services. As a Student Services Developer, she wrote a 225-page procedure manual on Student Services. She also implemented programs and activities aimed at rewarding and recognizing students, faculty and staff, which greatly impacted retention on all levels.
But Sharon’s true passion is teaching! She believes that an Instructor must be multi-faceted: an educator – able to convert information to knowledge and convey it to a diversified audience; a facilitator – capable of maintaining focus and keeping the student in a goal-oriented, safe learning environment. And last, but not least, an entertainer – able to incorporate humor into the educational arena to show that learning CAN be fun.
SUNDY BELLEZZA – INSURANCE TECHNOLOGY FACULTY
Insurance & Health Information Technology Instructor, Newark Campus
Sundy Bellezza has been involved in the healthcare industry for over 20 years. She began her career as a Case Management secretary, working her way up to becoming an administrative assistant in a private rehabilitation hospital. She then went on to work as an office manager, and this experience gave her additional opportunities to continue within the medical field, where she became familiar with different tasks of the office, including billing and coding.
Sundy eventually became a practice manager for a rehabilitation facility, dealing mainly with physical therapy, psychiatry, neurology, physiatry and orthopedics. She continued her career as a practice administrator and as a regulatory administrator for several clinical trial studies within an urgent care facility. While at this facility, Sundy was afforded the opportunity to continue her career in teaching medical billing and coding for the Harris school. She became lead Instructor for the Health Claims Specialist program, and was also the lead Instructor at the Advantage Career Institute, where she authored the curriculum for the Allied Health Program.
Sundy is currently an Insurance & Health Information Technology Instructor for Star Career Academy’s insurance technology program. Additionally, she is also certified in First Aid and CPR.
JACQUELINE T. BETHEA – DIALYSIS FACULTY
Dialysis Technician Instructor, Egg Harbor Campus
While Jacqueline was caring for her ailing husband, she made the choice to open her heart to strangers, instead of feeling sorry for herself. When her husband died, she began her career of over 25 years in the dialysis field at Shore Memorial Hospital. Church is an important part of her life, and she is a Praise and Worship dancer. While she loves traveling and seeing new sights, Jacqueline especially enjoys her new career as an Instructor at Star Career Academy’s Dialysis Training School in Egg Harbor Township.
JAN BLUMER – SURGICAL FACULTY
Surgical Technology Instructor, Egg Harbor Campus
Jan presently prepares students in the surgical technology program at Star Career Academy to become well-educated future Surgical Technologists. She teaches students about the sterilization of instruments, the many different types of instruments, their uses, and where they are to be placed on each specific tissue (with an explanation of why said instrument is placed there). Jan also teaches students the anatomy of the body and how it functions.
A 1994 graduate of the Delaware Valley Academy, Jan received a diploma as a Medical Assistant, and later that year received her RMA. In 2000, she graduated CHI Institute with a diploma in Surgical Technology. She received her CST in 2004, through the LCCST.
Jan spent four years working as a medical assistant (RMA) for a dermatology office, helping in minor surgeries and suture patient wounds, and administering UVB light treatments to patients with skin disorders. She also ordered medical supplies for two of their offices. She eventually became a surgical technologist, her current position. Jan has worked in the field for 11 years and has also served as a preceptor for surgical technology students from other surgical tech schools during their externship.
In 2009, Jan decided to pursue the opportunity to teach what she knew and loved. She is still ‘on-call’ – staying updated in the field and open to teaching new techniques, as things are always changing in the operating room.
Jan’s philosophy is that when one works in a field they love, they will be great at it. She still enjoys taking calls from to time, and she definitely enjoys her extended career as an Instructor. For Jan, teaching students and hearing how well they have done on their externships is a reward in itself.
PATRICIA BOARDS – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY
Medical Assistant Instructor, Manhattan Campus
Patricia Boards graduated from MicroTech Institute (now known as Easton International College) as a Medical Office Administrator Specialist. She obtained her Clinical Medical Assistant certification in 2000.
Ms. Boards has assisted a number of doctors for over 20 years in a number of different medical facilities. Her favorite specialty has been working with general surgeons.
She cherishes her experience working in this field, and especially the interaction with patients. She made the transition to education easily, since sharing her knowledge with students is truly rewarding for her.
TERRICE BOGAN – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY
Medical Assistant Instructor, Newark Campus
Terrice Brogan has been in the medical field for over seven years. He began his career as a Central Sterile Processor at NMMC in Tupelo, MS, where he studied and learned different instruments and procedures that are used for major surgeries. He later became a Home Health Aide, learning more about patient care in various situations.
Terrice eventually moved to New York where he studied Nursing Assistant at Franklin Career Institute in Hempstead, NY. He pursued a career in Medical Assisting from what was then the Chubb Institute in Jersey City, NJ. This experience gave him the opportunity to work with excellent physicians and RNs, which enhanced his knowledge and experience.
After graduating with top honors in his class, he had the opportunity to begin teaching as a Medical Assistant Instructor at P.C Tech Learning Center in Newark, NJ, which in turn opened the door for various jobs in the medical field. Today, he serves as a CCMA/Lead Instructor for Star Career Academy’s medical assistant school in Newark, NJ. He currently has several certifications including ECG Technician, Medical Assistant, and Phlebotomy Technology.
TAMMY CHAN – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY
Medical Assistant Instructor, Manhattan Campus
Tammy Chan has been a registered medical assistant and a member of the American Medical Technologist since 2006, and she brings over six years of medical knowledge and experience to our academy. She has worked with physicians in various specialties such as physical medicine and rehabilitation, pain medicine, gastroenterology, and dermatology.
Ms. Chan has work experience in both clinical and administrative settings and her business and industry experience is most valuable to the Star classrooms and labs. She advises and mentors students not only in coursework, but in achieving results – whether this means finding a new job or improving a current one. She brings dedication and passion to all of her students with the expectation that they will provide exceptional care to their future patients.
Regarding her teaching philosophy, Ms. Chan says, “Hands-on, guided practice is very important for the medical field. Everyone can learn if given the right opportunity.”
CLAUDETTE CLARKE – SURGICAL FACULTY
Surgical Technology Instructor, Manhattan Campus
Claudette Clarke graduated Cum Laude from Nassau Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology. Ms. Clarke worked for Long Island Jewish Medical Center for five years, assisting in ENT, general, GYN and oral surgeries. She continued her work experience at Nassau University Medical Center, where she expanded her knowledge in cardio, thoracic, orthopedic, burn trauma and bariatric surgeries. She is a member of, and certified through, the Association of Surgical Technology (AST).
Mrs. Clarke enjoyed her years working in the operating room as a Surgical Assistant. Her deep interest in sharing her knowledge and experience with others led her to pursue a career in teaching. Claudette joined the Star Career Academy of New York education team in spring 2011. As Lead Instructor, she has developed and leads the Surgical Technology Department for Star’s surgical tech schools. Her goal is to provide a program that educates and trains students properly for working in the field. She believes in the expression, “practice makes perfect.”
THOMAS COLLINS – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY
Medical Assistant Instructor, Manhattan Campus
Thomas Collins started his medical career in 2000, beginning as an EMT, working medical transport with critical care and acute care patients. During his first year, he quickly moved on to working with the 911 systems, where he dealt with trauma, burn, and medical patients. Throughout his EMS career, and as he became more proficient in his skills, Thomas became an educator for one of New Jersey’s Level One trauma centers (UMDNJ), where he is still currently active. Other accomplishments include becoming part of New Jersey’s EMS Task Force, where he stays on call year-round in case of any State or National Emergencies. One of his more recent jobs as a Mass Casualty Expert was responding to Flight 1549, which landed in the Hudson River (Sully). Throughout his career, Thomas has received several commendations for his unselfishness and going beyond his responsibilities. Besides his expertise in the field, he also has four years of experience working side by side with an elite team of doctors and nurses in an emergency room. Many of his responsibilities include critical thinking in fast-paced environments for patients that are in cardiac arrest and critical conditions. At Star Career Academy’s medical assistant school, Thomas brings a wide range of field medical experience to our students, as well as creative field scenarios that bring a real life experience to the classrooms.
DOROTHY CORTES – MEDICAL FACULTY
Lead Instructor, Brick Campus
Dorothy Cortes has been in the medical field for 18 years. She began her career while she was a senior in high school, where she became a Registered Dental Assistant. In 2005, she graduated from Star Technical Institute, and then became a Certified Cardiovascular Technician and a Certified Phlebotomist.
With years of experience working as a Cardiovascular Technician in a Cardiologist’s office, Dorothy became an Instructor at Star Career Academy’s medical training school two years ago. She loves every aspect of the medical field and truly enjoys teaching and giving her students the knowledge and experience they need to excel in the medical field. Teaching is her passion and she really enjoys working with these students.
BEVERLY DEMIR – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY
Medical Assistant Instructor, Newark Campus
Beverly Demir has been employed in medical field for most of her adult life. Beginning her career at St. Clair’s Hospital in Denville NJ, Beverly served as a phlebotomist and also tested blood in the chemistry lab. She was part of the staff at an assistant living facility in Spring Lake, NJ, where she checked patients’ vital statistics, and maintained the glucose levels and insulin injections of diabetic patients.
Beverly received her training in medical and laboratory assisting at Career Academy in Washington, DC. She later renewed her training at the Harrison Career Institute, which qualified her to become certified as a Medical Assistant and Phlebotomy Technician. She also trained at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, NJ for Emergency Medical Technician, where she volunteered for the Spring Lake First Aid Squad.
In 2002, Beverly began teaching Medical Assisting at the Harrison Career Institute. She eventually became Lead Instructor at Harrison, where she placed students on their extern sites as well as assisted in job placement. Beverly began teaching at Star Career Academy’s medical assistant school in 2007 as a Medical Assistant Instructor, where she also served in placing externs for two years. She trained at St. Michael’s Medical Center to become an Instructor for CPR in 2008. For the last 11 years, Beverly has actively served as a Medical Assistant in an urgent care center in Manasquan, NJ.
ANTHONY DUNAWAY – SURGICAL FACULTY

Anthony Dunaway is a certified Surgical Technology Instructor for Star Career Academy. He currently teaches the program here and brings with him profound knowledge of the surgical environment. Over his academic career, he has been active in various capacities with several professional organizations, including NCCT, IAHCSMM, Star Technical Institute and Central Sterile Processing. Anthony has tutored numerous students during his time in the field at the University Of Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. Mr. Dunaway continues to strive for education in the field of healthcare. He currently attends Mercer County Community College for Registered Nursing. Anthony’s philosophy is “Just Do It!”
DENISE FALLOWS – INSURANCE TECHNOLOGY FACULTY

Mrs. Denise Fallows joined Star’s Insurance Technology Program at the Egg Harbor Township campus in 2009, brining with her an extensive background in Medical Billing and Insurance. She is a Certified Professional Coder and a member of the American Academy of Professional Coders.
She graduated with honors from Star Technical Institute of Vineland in 1988, having pursued the Computerized Programming and Accounting course of study. She also attended Cumberland County Community College in 1999, where she received a certification for Medical Office Administration. At the Medical Consultants Instructional Training Center of Glassboro, she received her certification in Medical Billing and Coding in 2000. In 2005, she obtained her Certified Professional Coder (CPC) designation, as well as serving as a member of the advisory board of MCITC for three years.
Mrs. Fallows comes with more than 20 years of hands-on experience in the medical billing, coding and collection field. Her past employment includes working for Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC in the collections department. She also created and implemented the Medical Billing and Collections Department for a large physical therapy facility in Mount Laurel, NJ, as the director of Patient Accounts.
She has taught as an adjunct Instructor for MCITC, as well as an Instructor at the Medical Billing Department at Virtua Hospital in Camden, NJ, on behalf of Camden County Community College. Her medical specialties include Internal Medicine and Physical Therapy.
Mrs. Fallows’ philosophy is: “If you enjoy what you do and have the desire to see the success of your students, then teaching is most certainly not a job but rather a calling.” She has always dreamed of assisting those persons who are seeking to better themselves, and instills in each of her students that hard work and the desire to succeed are the most powerful tools one can possess – and that their success will be her success.
KATHLEEN FISCHER – CARDIOLOGY FACULTY
Department Chair, Cardiology Technician Program, Philadelphia Campus
Kathleen Fischer’s career in allied health started many years ago at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, where she worked directly with many world famous cardiologists. Her position at HUP advanced to the Coumadin Clinic, where she then worked in the cardiac testing labs. Kathleen continued to educate herself in both clinical and administrative capacities. After learning and growing in the field of Cardiology at University of Pennsylvania, Kathleen accepted a Management position with Cooper University Hospital. Kathleen’s position as Practice Coordinator included responsibilities such as overseeing the staff, including all Cardiac Testing labs (Stress Testing, Nuclear Stress Testing, Vascular Testing, Heart Failure Clinic and the Electrophysiology Clinic). Her specialized cardiac education in the field of Echocardiography and Electrophysiology gives her a well-rounded ability to teach Cardiac Theory as well as Practical application. Kathleen joined Star Career Academy’s Cardiology School in 2009 as a Cardiology Technician Instructor, where she advanced to the Department Chair that same year.
Kathleen’s philosophy is: “Never allow anyone to say ‘NO’ to you regarding something that you want in life! If someone tells you ‘NO’ find ten ways around that negative comment and go get what you want in life!”
DONALD FREER – SURGICAL FACULTY

Donald Freer is a Certified Surgical Technologist who currently teaches in the Surgical Technology program at Star Career Academy. With many years of experience in the medical field, Donald has worked as a Surgical Technologist in hospitals since 2000, and has been teaching since 2003. He is a member of the Association of Surgical Technologists, and also has a seat on the Board of Directors for the New Jersey Surgical Technology State Assembly. Teaching the Surgical Technology program is something Donald really enjoys doing. He loves being able to bring his knowledge and field experience to the classroom and preparing his students for life-long careers in the medical field.
OLGA GARCIA – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY
Medical Assistant Instructor, Manhattan Campus
Olga Garcia obtained her Medical Assistant certificate at MTI, embarking on her medical career one year later. Her expertise entails working with nurse practitioners as well as general practitioners in the fields of urology, gynecology, and infectious diseases.
For ten years, Olga worked in Newark, NJ, in high volume offices, and in the process, went from receptionist, to Medical Assistant in charge of billing and collections, to Senior MA. She also trained new employees, showed residents how to draw blood, and was eventually promoted to Assistant Manager in a 12-employee office.
Her extensive career is filled with knowledge of different specialties, as well as clinical and administrative expertise. Subsequently, Olga’s drive to educate led her to become an Instructor in New Jersey. Her passion to teach and energetic personality gave her the opportunity to continue her journey at Star Career Academy’s medical assistant school.
HELEN GINIS – MEDICAL ASSISTANT & CARDIOLOGY FACULTY
Medical Assistant & Cardiology Technician Instructor, Egg Harbor Campus
Helen Ginis graduated from Delaware County Community College with an Associate’s degree in Applied Science, and a certification in Medical Assisting. While attending school, Helen worked part time at a family practice in Philadelphia.
Upon graduating from college, Helen began working at an internal medicine office, and her responsibilities included performing ECGs and venipunctures. In September of 2001, Helen moved to South Jersey and started working at a local pediatrician’s office, where her love for her patients kept her working there for a total of eight years.
Wanting to share her love for the medical field and her love of teaching, Helen joined the team of Instructors here at Star Career Academy in April of 2009. She was hired as an evening Phlebotomy Instructor at Star’s medical assistant school. She has taught all of the Medical Assisting courses, as well as introduction to Cardiology Technician for Star’s cardiology school. Helen has also taught Phlebotomy at another Star sister school, whenever there was a need for Instructors.
NANCY GRODBERG – SURGICAL FACULTY
Surgical Technology Instructor, Brick Campus
Nancy Grodberg attended Ultrasound Diagnostics School in Islen, NJ. She followed this with extern rotation at Riverview Medical Center, which proved to be a wonderful experience for her. Upon graduation in 2000 and completion at Riverview, Nancy was offered a position there. Although grateful for the opportunity, she also applied at Jersey Shore Medical Center, since it was a Trauma Center and she realized she would get the best experience there. After four years at Riverview, Nancy resigned upon being offered a position at Toms River Orthopedic Center. Additionally, Nancy worked with a private surgeon for four years.
Nancy came to Star Career Academy in October 2007. She absolutely loves her job as an Instructor and being a part of teaching her students a new career so they can better their lives. She considers having become a Surgical Technician as the best decision she has ever made. Nancy appreciates the opportunity to share her knowledge here at Star’s surgical tech school with others, so they may find the same satisfaction and gratitude that she has.
VICTORIA L. INDIO – MEDICAL FACULTY
Introduction to Health Instructor, Egg Harbor Campus
Vickie developed an interest in the medical field at an early age. She began her training in 1981 at the CHI Institute, where she graduated as a Certified Dental Assistant. Additionally, she earned a degree in Medical Billing and Coding from the CDM Institute. Vickie worked for several local dentists, and eventually finished her career as a dental assistant while working at OraCare in Vineland, NJ. She moved on from this career, migrating to a hospital setting at Atlantic City Medical Center, where she received on the job training to become a Certified SPD (Sterile Processing Department) Technician. The skills gained here helped Vicki segue into the dialysis field, where she has spent the majority of her career. As a dialysis technician, Vicki has worked in various medical centers, including Shore Memorial Hospital, Kessler Memorial Hospital, Kennedy Memorial Hospital and DCA in Vineland, NJ. Her career path has now taken her to serving as an Instructor in Star Career Academy’s medical training programs.
During her tenure in the medical field, Vickie has always enjoyed working with patients, as well as with those assigned to her for training. Her ability to impart knowledge and skills has made a great impression on other professionals and students. As an Instructor at Star’s technician schools, Vickie feels that she has reached the pinnacle of success in her career. This position has enhanced her abilities, and has helped her realize her love for teaching. She thoroughly enjoys instructing, and looks forward to interacting with her students to both teach and learn from them.
Vickie’s philosophy is that success comes from enjoying and loving what you do. In her opinion, very little can be more honorable than to be able to help others learn and embark on what she considers to be a worthwhile and noble career in the field of medicine. To that end, she will dedicate herself to giving her best for the betterment of her students.
GREGORY L. JACKSON – SURGICAL FACULTY
Surgical Technology Instructor, Clifton Campus
Gregory L. Jackson graduated from Triton College’s two-year Surgical Technology Program in River Grove, IL. He has been a surgical technologist for over 17 years. During this time, he has served in both teaching and private hospitals, where he worked as a preceptor for both surgical technology students and central service technician students. In addition, he worked with Registered Nurses who had little scrubbing and instrumentation experience, and new hires.
Gregory was a traveling surgical technologist for six years, where he used his skills and knowledge of surgery to assist in numerous types of operations. He has extensive experience in orthopedic surgery, general and endovascular and laparoscopic surgery. For the past five years, Gregory’s teaching experience has been at the Chubb Institute as a Surgical Technology Instructor, Long Island University as a BCLS Instructor, and at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City for The Endovascular Program as Lead Tech/Preceptor/Trainer of the Hospital Staff.
In September of 2008, Gregory was hired at the Star Newark Campus. In June of 2009, he was promoted to Lead Instructor/Surgical Technology Instructor at the Clifton Campus, and in January of 2011, he was promoted to the Director of Education at the Clifton Campus.
Gregory is also a Certified BCLS Instructor, a Certified Central Service Technician Instructor and Certified Healthcare Instructor. He is active with the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST), International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM), National Health Career Association (NHA), and Regional Emergency Medical Services Council of New York (REMSCO).
His philosophy is “See one, do one, teach one.” RENEE D. JOHNSON – CARDIOLOGY FACULTY
Cardiology Technician Instructor, Philadelphia Campus
Renee Johnson has worked in the medical field since 1978. Starting out as a Nursing Assistant in her junior year in high school, Renee moved on to pursue an education in EKG and Telemetry, graduating in 1994. To satisfy her thirst for knowledge, Renee returned to school for Medical Billing and graduated in 2003 from the Gloucester County Vocational School in Sewell, NJ.
Renee worked at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, NJ, where she had the privilege of working with an awesome team in opening The Heart Center. Always going above and beyond the call of duty, she was crossed-trained to perform EEG (Electroencephalogram) and Phlebotomy. Last year, Renee became a certified Phlebotomist. At Underwood Memorial Hospital, she was given the opportunity to train all new employees and perform annual competency training for all other employees within her first year working in the lab.
In 1997, Renee moved on to become a Medical Assistant Instructor at the Star Technical Institute’s medical assistant school in Deptford, NJ. After two years, Star Technical Institute became Harrison Career Institute, where she became Senior Medical Instructor. After the success of having a student retention rate of 90%, Renee received an award for Instructor of the Year. In 2000, she became the School Director.
Active in the community, Renee was the Vice-President of Matters of the Heart, a non-profit organization in Paulsboro, NJ, from 2001-2010. She has also had the chance to work with The March of Dimes, The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Committee, The Juvenile Justice Commission in Trenton, Girls Circle of America and the Boys and Girls Club in New Jersey.
Renee has been able to successfully combine both professions along with her community experience to continue her work as a Medical Instructor. Having the ability to reach out to young women to give them advice, direction and instruction, Renee is currently employed at Star Career Academy’s cardiology school at the Egg Harbor Township campus.
JUDITH LENZI – CARDIOLOGY FACULTY
Cardiology Technician Instructor, Egg Harbor Campus
As a single mom of twin girls and a grandmother of three, on top of working full time at AtlantiCare, one would think Judith Lenzi was busy enough. Eight years ago, however, she began teaching at Star Career Academy (“…teaching stole my heart,” to quote Judith). She has become a permanent part time fixture at Star’s Cardiology School in Egg Harbor Township Campus, working evenings and substituting when needed. Judith loves learning about new things, and is currently pursuing her degree as an RN at Atlantic Cape Community College. As if all of these accomplishments weren’t enough, Judith runs a small company that creates many varieties of chocolate covered pretzels and beautiful gift baskets, as well as special silent auctions for many different fundraisers.
MART MAMANTA – DIALYSIS FACULTY
Hemodialysis Instructor, Clifton Campus
A 2003 graduate from Sovereign Healthcare Provider Services, LLC Certification Program, Mart Mamanta has been in the Hemodialysis field since August 2004. He began his career as a hemodialysis tech and later became a preceptor for a major company – Fresenius Medical Services. Mart has taught and trained many employees to work both effectively and safely in a hemodialysis setting. He has worked in many other facilities and hospitals throughout the years, gaining experience along the way.
In 2009, Mart was hired to work at the Star Newark Campus, from where he eventually transferred to Star’s Clifton Campus to start the first Dialysis Class at Star Career Academy’s dialysis training school.
GUILLERMO J. MANTILLA – MEDICAL FACULTY
Allied Health Chair, Manhattan Campus
Guillermo J. Mantilla entered the medical industry in 2002, after a career in insurance technology. He has over eight years of experience in a variety of specialties, including dermatology, hematology, cosmetic surgery, cardiology, internal medicine, psychology, and psychiatry. Guillermo attended The Chubb Institute, where he received the distinction of graduating as Valedictorian of Allied Health Programs and receiving his diploma in Medical Assisting. He later took the national examination to become a Registered Medical Assistant through American Medical Technologist. In 2008, he began working at Star Career Academy as an evening Instructor, educating and sharing with students his knowledge and experiences as a medical assistant. Following his experience as an Instructor, he decided to challenge the examination to become a Certified Healthcare Instructor through The National Health Career Association. Guillermo decided to expand his medical knowledge in 2010, and returned to school to acquire his license as an Emergency Medical Technician from the New Jersey State Department of Health. He is currently pursuing a degree in Pre-hospital Medicine, in order to ultimately be able to challenge the National Boards Examination of Nursing.
ALBERTA McCOY – MEDICAL ASSISTANT & DIALYSIS FACULTY
Medical Assistant & Dialysis Instructor, Newark Campus
Alberta McCoy has over 17 years of experience in the medical field. Ms. McCoy started her career as an emergency medical technician, where she learned how to handle a variety of medical, trauma, and psychiatric emergencies. Alberta worked in EMS for various cities including Irvington and Orange, NJ. She then continued her career at University Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Mountainside Hospital, and in the Emergency Department of East Orange General.
Alberta was employed as a Dialysis Technician by Fresenius, and in several private practices as a Certified Medical Assistant. This experience gave her the opportunity to work as a Medical Assistant Instructor, teaching students the fundamentals of medical assisting. Alberta has served as a corporate trainer at Concentra Medical center, training all staff on front and back office procedures, and as a Medical Office Manager at Care Station, ensuring the effective operation of the center on all company policy and procedures.
Today, she serves as a Dialysis and Medical Assistant Instructor for Star Career Academy’s dialysis training school and medical assistant school. She currently has several certifications such as National Certified Medical Assistant, NJ Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Post-Secondary Instructor and Certified Urine Drug Instructor. Alberta is also proficient in many other specializations.
JANET McINTEER – SURGICAL FACULTY
Surgical Technology Instructor, Newark Campus
Janet McInteer has fifteen years of experience as a surgical technologist. She started her career with an externship at Denver Health Medical Center (formerly Denver General), which was the only Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center in the Rocky Mountain Region. Ms. McInteer continued her work in Denver in the Central Processing Departments at Swedish and Littleton Hospitals. She then moved home to Kansas and worked in the operating room at Salina Regional Medical Center, perfecting the art of surgical technology (and becoming part of the open heart team). After extensive experience at Salina Regional, Ms. McInteer became a traveling surgical technologist. With a new assignment (and relocation) every 13 weeks, the years flew by. During an assignment at Loyola Medical Center in Chicago, she became part of the ENT team and worked with many well-respected ENT surgeons, gaining a love of ENT surgeries in the process. After two years in Chicago, it was time to travel again. Some assignments were in SPD (instrument sterilization) departments, while most were in operating rooms around the country. Ms. McInteer eventually settled in New Jersey as an On-Site Manager for American Endoscopy Services at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. She then became an Instructor for Star Career Academy’s surgical technology program at the Brick, NJ campus. Eventually, she relocated north to the Newark campus.
Ms. McInteer is dual certified in both surgical technology (CST) and sterile processing (CSPDT). In addition to specializing in ENT and ophthalmology, she enjoys vascular, GYN, general, urology, and trauma surgeries. She also maintains her BLS certification.
CHRIS MERLINO – CARDIOLOGY FACULTY
Cardiology Technician Instructor, Philadelphia Campus
Chris was born and raised in the surrounding Philadelphia area, where she currently lives and raises her family. From very early in her life, Chris knew that she wanted to teach. This had always been her life’s dream – helping to mold the minds of others and teaching them new skills. She eventually learned about the Cardiology Technician program from her older sister who was a registered Cardiology Technician (and who is now a Respiratory Therapist). Chris followed in her sister’s footsteps and became a Certified Cardiac Technician.
While attending her own Cardiology Technician program, Chris thought to herself, “Someday I would like to be teacher in a Cardiology School.” For the next 20 years, Chris worked in the Cardiology field, learning everything she possibly could. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Management and she has also performed EEGs. Then, out of the blue, she was given an opportunity that changed her life when she needed it the most. She was offered a job as a Cardiology Technician Instructor at Star Career Academy’s Cardiology School in Philadelphia. Now she is able to combine her life’s dream of teaching with a subject she has spent 20 years studying and practicing.
BHARAT MODI – CARDIOLOGY FACULTY
Cardiology Technician Instructor, Clifton Campus
With over 30 years of experience, Bharat Modi has extensive experience in many areas of the medical field. Beginning his career in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, Bharat served as a family physician, where he managed outpatient, indoor patients, performed minor surgical work and gained experience administering IV line with phlebotomy and butterfly procedures.
Bharat’s teaching qualifications include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, medical communication skills, patient care, as well as laws and ethics for the medical assistant, surgical technologist, phlebotomist, ultrasound, pharmacy and EKG technician programs.
Before joining Star Career Academy’s cardiology school, Bharat served as Surgical Technology Instructor at EIC in Belleville NJ, and at AIMS in South Plainfield, NJ. Bharat understands the learning abilities of his students and plans lectures or methods of teaching accordingly. He considers it vital to make the subject interesting and alive with demonstrations, models, and the latest techniques of teaching, as well as having the students active in classroom discussions.
LINDA K. MONREALE – MEDICAL ASSISTANT & CARDIOLOGY FACULTY
Medical Assistant & Cardiology Technician Instructor, Egg Harbor Campus
Linda Monreale was born and raised in Atlantic City, NJ, in an area commonly known as “Ducktown”. A predominately Italian community with all that that implies (family traditions, neighbors always willing to help, strong church ties and the smells of fabulous cooking) Linda considers growing up in this time and place as something that she cherishes to this day.
Upon graduating from high school in 1959, Linda entered the Medical Technology program at what was then named Atlantic City Hospital. This was a three-year program, and immediately after graduating, she was hired by the hospital and assigned to the chemistry department of the laboratory. After three years in chemistry, Linda was promoted to a supervisory position in hematology, which she held for two years. During this time the hospital, in conjunction with the laboratory department, opened an auxiliary lab in the emergency room, and Linda was offered the position of manager, which she accepted and held for 35 years. Due to illness in her family that needed her total attention, Linda resigned from this position.
In 2003, after several years of “retirement”, Linda was offered a position with Star Technical Institute, later to be known as Star Career Academy, which she holds at present.
JOSE MORA – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY
Medical Assistant Instructor, Manhattan Campus
Jose Mora has over nine years of experience in the medical field. He began his career as an EMT, where he quickly learned to deal with a variety of medical, psychiatric and trauma emergencies. Soon after this, he continued his career at Hoboken University Medical Center within the E.R. department.
This experience gave Jose the opportunity to work side-by-side with excellent physicians and RNs, enhancing his knowledge of the medical field. Eventually, he transitioned into the education department at Hoboken University Medical Center, where he took on many responsibilities, including assisting nursing in-services and training the staff to use new equipment. In addition, he was the lead Instructor for many classes and oversaw the development and scheduling of the curriculum. While teaching at the hospital, Jose also assisted with corporate and public classes within the community.
Jose today serves as an Instructor for Star Career Academy, St. Michael’s Medical Center, and New York Presbyterian. He currently has several certifications, including Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Advance Burn Life Support (ABLS), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), as well as having proficiency in other specializations.
MELYSSA MUNCH – CARDIOLOGY FACULTY

Melyssa Munch is a graduate of the HoHoKus School of Business and Medical Science, in Ramsey, NJ. She holds certifications as a Medical Assistant, in Echocardiography, and General Sonography. She is also a Certified Post-Secondary Instructor and CPR Instructor.
Melyssa has worked in many different hospitals and doctors’ offices in New York and New Jersey. She has taught a variety of different cardiac subjects at Star Career Academy’s cardiology school for the past six years and originally had no idea how much she would enjoy being in a classroom setting, sharing her knowledge of the cardiac field with her students, who she is inspired by on a daily basis. Melyssa did not realize how rewarding being an Instructor could be, and she truly enjoys watching her students excel in the medical field.
MARTINA PERCHIACCA – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY
Medical Assistant Instructor, Brick Campus
The year 2011 marks Martina Perchiacca’s 22nd year in the healthcare field, having begun her career on a Head Trauma Unit as a Nursing Assistant in Garden State Rehabilitation Hospital, Toms River, NJ. Martina remembers patients as being in very serious condition, requiring months of rehabilitation. It proved to be an extremely rewarding position and a great learning experience. She then went on to Whiting Healthcare, Whiting NJ, and worked for five years in an Alzheimer’s Unit. Her knowledge from both Head Trauma and Alzheimer’s patients taught her a great deal regarding the brain and how it works. Martina left Whiting Healthcare in 1998.
Wanting to try something new, Martina went to work at Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin, NJ, working on the Telemetry floor. In 2002, she became a Medical Assistant for six doctors in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. As these were family practices, she gained knowledge and applied her skills in many different areas. Her dedication and hard work was rewarded with taking many responsibilities in the office, including taking care of insurance verifications and referrals, and training new employees. Martina decided to further her career and went back to school in 2009, where she graduated that April as a Medical Office Specialist. Her studies included medical billing and coding, medical transcription, and computer courses in Microsoft Word and Excel. She went on to receive certifications as a Medical/Billing Specialist and as a Medical Administrative Assistant.
Martina is very happy to be part of the faculty at Star Career Academy’s medical assistant school. She wishes to take all of her years of knowledge and experience and share them with the students in the medical assistant program. The years spent in the healthcare field have been very rewarding to her. Martina’s goal is to help her medical assistant students in gaining the same experience and rewards as she has gained. SUSAN PUENTES – INSURANCE TECHNOLOGY FACULTY
Insurance & Health Information Technology Instructor, Egg Harbor Campus
Susan Puentes graduated from Montclair University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation, she worked in a nursing home setting for seven years, as the director of therapeutic recreation.
In 1992, Susan left the nursing home setting and began working in acute hospital settings. She began her five years at Kessler Memorial Hospital, with the responsibilities involved with managing the charity care program. She interviewed and assisted non-insured patients through the process to qualify for assistance with their medical bill.
After one year, Susan became the manager of the Patient Accounts Department. She utilized her ability to oversee all aspects of the hospital’s billing functions, including collection activities. Susan supervised 11 employees and worked closely with the chief financial officer to ensure the success of the hospital.
In 1998, Susan directed her interest toward physician office billing and collections, where she oversaw the day-to-day operations. She worked closely with the physicians and the office staff in all aspects of the physician practice, which included negotiating contracts with the insurance companies for fee-for-services and marketing the practice. Through her responsibility to ensure optimal accounts receivable goals, Susan influenced the success and profitable operations of the practice.
Susan is a member of the Medical Group Management Associations (MGMA) and Association of Dermatology Administrators/Managers (ADAM).
Currently, Susan is an Instructor at Star Career Academy’s insurance technology program in Egg Harbor Township.
CHERYL REPKO – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY

Cheryl Repko joined the Star medical assistant school in February of 2009. A 1987 graduate of Berdan Institute in Wayne, NJ, with certifications in Phlebotomy and Medical Assisting, Cheryl also attended Ultrasound Diagnostic School in Iselin, NJ in 1992, where she earned her certification in Echocardiography.

MARVIN SANDINO – MEDICAL FACULTY

Marvin Sandino has been in the teaching field for over nine years. This career began upon graduation from Boston College, where Marvin earned a double major in French and Economics. Having taught French and English as a second language to adults for several years in South Florida, he eventually decided to attend medical school in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he obtained his medical degree. After completing his medical training, Marvin moved to Puerto Rico, where, combining his prior teaching experience with his newly acquired medical knowledge, he taught the core and specific classes for the LPN, Pharmacy Technician, and the Respiratory Technician programs. Marvin lived and taught in Puerto Rico for over three years, but eventually decided to move to New Jersey, where he immediately began teaching at Star Career Academy’s cardiology school. He taught the Medical Assistant program (numerous times in its entirety) for more than a year. When Star Career Academy decided to incorporate the Cardiology Technician program, he was the first Instructor to teach all the modules. Marvin currently teaches CT 103, or the Special Procedures module, and is also a member of the Student Discipline and Appeals committee.
TAMICKA SCOTT – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY

Tamicka Scott has over 17 years of experience in the medical field. Ms. Scott started her career as a Medical Assistant and Medical Biller, where she quickly learned to deal with a variety of medical, and trauma emergencies. ANNA M. SHULTZ – MEDICAL ASSISTING FACULTY
Medical Assistant & Phlebotomy Instructor, Philadelphia Campus
Anna has always dreamed of working in the medical field, first as a “CSI” agent. So, she pursued her education at the Philadelphia School of Arts with a degree in Photography, and then went on to Lincoln Technical Institute to enroll in the Medical Assistant program. She has earned titles as a Registered Medical Assistant and Phlebotomist. She is also EKG and IV Therapy Certified. Having the experience of studying under a wonderful teacher, Anna decided that she wanted to follow in her footsteps and become an MA Instructor.
Having taught at another school for one year, Anna has come to feel “at home” at Star Career Academy’s Medical Assistant School. She enjoys waking up each day and going to work, and has come to feel that this was her life’s calling – to teach and inspire others to pursue their goals with a good attitude. KIMBERLY STASZKO – MEDICAL ASSISTING FACULTY
Medical Assistant Program Chair & Phlebotomy Instructor, Philadelphia Campus
Kim is a former student of Star Technical Institute, having graduated in the 90’s with a Medical Assistant diploma and receiving her national certification in MA and Phlebotomy. She completed her externship in a cardiology office, which then hired her at the completion of her hours.
Kim worked along with and assisted five physicians and numerous other technicians. She eventually moved on to a very busy Occupational Medicine/Urgent Care practice, where she stayed for over ten years, having worked both front office and back office. While working in Occupational Medicine/Urgent Care, Kim learned many different procedures in assisting these physicians, some of whom were the best in Philadelphia.
While continuing her education and earning more certifications over the years, it was her previous manager who encouraged Kim to become a teacher, having told her that she would be great at it. Kim worked with a lot of students that came into the office for externship as well as new employees. She then decided to give it a try. Now, she loves it very much, and is most grateful that she had such wonderful support in her transition. “There’s nothing more satisfying than having a student come back to you with such a great success story.”
Kim still continues her education and growth as a professional. “You will never stop learning and the possibilities are endless.” She now teaches Phlebotomy at Star Career Academy, as well as serving as the Chair for the Medical Assistant Program. She is currently advancing in the educational aspect of her career with continued courses and classes.

Patrick H. Sullivan currently serves as an Instructor at Star Career Academy’s medical assistant school. He started out in the medical field in 1999, and has worked in a variety of settings, including Primary Care, Specialist, and Animal Medicine.
Having thoroughly enjoyed his medical experiences, Patrick was eventually led to what he considers as a wonderful teaching career with Star Career Academy. For starters, as an Instructor he is able to pass off and relay all of the necessary information off to his students and give them real life situations that they may be able to relate too. Anyone who chooses to attend Star Career Academy career schools will have a rewarding education and lifetime of knowledge.

Denise Thurman, a pre-nursing student of Thomas Jefferson University, is also certified as a Cardiology Technician and Phlebotomist, as well as in Health Care Administration.
Denise has 15 years of experience in the health care field, and has worked at various hospitals in both the Philadelphia and South Jersey area. Her experience ranges from Executive Administrative Duties to Clinical Research. She joined the Star Career Academy family in 2000 and is the Clinical Instructor of the Cardiology Technician Program.
ROSY VARGAS – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY

Rosy Vargas graduated in 2004 with honors from Sanford Brown in NYC. She brings over six years of medical knowledge to our school and has worked with physicians in various specialties of medicine such as gastroenterology, infectious diseases, plastic surgery and oncology. Additionally, within her first two years of working in the medical field, she was promoted to Head Medical Administrative and Clinical Manager.
Miss Vargas has not only mastered leadership skills, she also has an extraordinary personality and brings great energy to her classes. In a creative way, she teaches the students of Star Career Academy’s medical assistant school the importance of persistence, intellectual integrity and of having a strong work ethic. She brings dedication and passion to all her students with the expectation that they will provide exceptional care to their future patients.
APRIL VITULLI-RANKIN – MEDICAL ASSISTANT FACULTY

April Vitulli-Rankin has eight years of experience in the allied health field. She began working as a Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide. After her children grew older, she decided to go back to school. Having always loved the medical field, she attended a career institute where she graduated top of her class and also earned a certification in Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy and EKG.
Upon graduation, April worked as a Certified Medical Assistant at Stafford Medical, PA, which was a multi-specialty group. She worked there with 17 different doctors, who specialized in various disciplines (cardiologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists and internal medicine). Her many years of experience gave her knowledge and experience that is extensive and well rounded.
After about four years, April decided to pursue a teaching career, and is now a Medical Assisting Instructor at Star Career Academy’s medical assisting school. She is a hard working, dedicated, passionate medical assistant, and feels that the best way for her to make a difference is to educate her students to be the same. April finds that watching the students grow and learn is a very rewarding experience.
TAMMY WHITE – DIALYSIS FACULTY
Dialysis Instructor and Extern Coordinator, Philadelphia Campus
A 1985 graduate of Community College of Philadelphia, Tammy White began her dialysis career in 1991 at BMA Dialysis as a Reuse Technician. A few years later, she began working as a Hemodialysis Technician for both Belmont Court Acute and DaVita Dialysis. After establishing herself in the field of Hemodialysis, Tammy went on to work for Fresenius Medical Care for the next ten years, where she became an advocate for overall patient safety and well-being. It was also during this time that she was awarded several accommodations for her excellent work performance.
In 2008, Tammy left the clinical practice of dialysis to join Star Career Academy. In the few years that she has worked for Star’s Dialysis School, Tammy has excelled in her position. Her vast knowledge on the subject of dialysis has aided her in her duties of extern coordinator to such an extent, she was awarded the best retention rate of 2009. Tammy also attends regular in-services and continuing education seminars in order to ensure her students get the most up to date curriculum possible. Tammy is also a member of the National Kidney Foundation and is Certified in Hemodialysis and Bio-Medical.

Surgical Technology Instructor, Department Chair, Philadelphia Campus
Charleen attended Luzerne County Community College where she received an Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology. She is also CPR certified and holds National Certification in Surgical Technology.
Charleen has been a Surgical Technologist since 2000. After receiving her degree, she worked at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA and Wilkes-Barre General in Wilkes-Barre, PA. She then took her experience to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, where she learned kidney and liver transplants, as well as becoming a member of the heart and trauma team. Charleen worked at Jefferson for six years before moving on to Christiana Care Hospital in Delaware, where she demonstrated that she had the talent and capacity to be a good teacher. She then began to precept Star students, and after a short time she received the opportunity to teach full time at Star.
In October 2007, Charleen became a Surgical Technology Instructor, and she now chairs the Department of Surgical Technology at Star Career Academy. Charleen’s philosophy is “The Person who is doing the right thing, and has no corruption, has integrity.”
